Syngenta Seeds developed MIR 162 corn to provide an insect resistant corn genotype of the Lepidoptera class. For this, the company inserted the Vip3Aa gene into the corn genome, which is a Bacillus thuringiensis protein that is highly toxic to: Helicoverpa zea, Spodoptora frugiperda, Agrotis ipsilon, Ostrinia nubialis and Striacosta albicosta.
Within the scope of the powers of art. 14, CTNBio considered that the request complies with the relevant rules and legislation that aim to guarantee the biosafety of the environment, agriculture and human and animal health.
The results of biosafety studies showed that the proteins present in maize M1R162 - Vip3Aa20 and PMI, do not pose a risk to mammalian species or adverse effects on a wide range of non-target species belonging to the maize crop ecosystem. studies conducted with M1R162 corn in laboratories, greenhouses and in planned releases into the environment, including studies carried out in Brazil, confirm that there are no additional changes in its morphology, phenology and other compositional or agronomic parameters, in addition to the expected expression of Vip3Aa20 and PMI proteins.
The cultivation and consumption of MIR 162 corn does not potentially cause significant environmental degradation or risks to human and animal health.

The experiments were carried out in Uberlândia - MG and Ituiutaba/MG in 2007 and with the traps and analyzes used it can be concluded that the genetically modified corn MIR 162 has no adverse effect on the insect community or on the predator Doru luteipes or arthropods of ground.
The cultivation of MIR 162 corn does not potentially cause significant degradation of the environment, keeping the same relationship with the biota as that of conventional corn.
CTNBio considered that the request complies with the current norms and legislation that aim to guarantee the biosafety of the environment, agriculture, human and animal health and concluded that MIR 162 corn is substantially equivalent to conventional corn, and its consumption is safe for human and animal health animal.
